Hi Gregory, for some causal reason-- in spite of a couple of attempts --I haven't been able to DM you ( a sign from the Universe?) share some info that I feel would be spot on for your roster of offerings. 🧐
Hey Gregory, I just stumbled upon your substack, and started with this post. Even though I haven't read any of your other work yet, I applaud your approach to going paid. Keeping your free subscribers happy by continuing to provide them with the same output, and adding more value for paid subscribers is a great approach. You have a new subscriber, free for now, let's see what happens later! I also write about living abroad, from my perch on a tropical island in Thailand. Cool to connect!
Hi Kaila, and welcome! I'm afraid you've started with the least exciting post in my meagre archive, so I encourage you to read some others. I'm glad you like my thinking about finding balance between keeping subscribers happy and surviving financially. A tropical island in Thailand sounds very appealing. I will check it out!
Oh Michael, you've caught me being ambiguous! The relationship that ended was mine with Liza. The turtle and I are still as close as ever. (And Liza still loves her too, I think. 😊)
I do like what you’re doing. I’d be very interested in interviews and the linguistic considerations. It seems like you have a deep well of knowledge to draw from
The serialized long-form travel narrative intrigues the storyteller in me, Gregory, for what it’s worth! I wonder if Substack is a good venue for that? Not a leading question, I genuinely don’t know. 🤔 I’ve been considering something similar, in its way, and keep going back and forth.
Thanks, Michael! I know a few people on Substack who are serializing novels here, so I guess they're the ones who can say whether or not it works. But I think it's an intriguing idea.

Sorry to hear that the relationship with the turtle ended.

You caught me being a silly smart arse. Turtles tend to stick with you.
Don’t be amphibious.
No, reptile is my style.
Yeah, longer than many are prepared for! And I do hate to be ambiguous, so feel free to keep prodding me.

Thanks, Keith! I will definitely try not to lose sight of the linguistic stuff, which is, after all, the only thing I have a degree in!

Me, too, Gregory! It does seem to be a “subgenre” here which perhaps bodes well 🙂
omg I’ve seen you on the Avenida Cidade do Porto! Are you the guy with the ladder?
No, I'm the guy with the floppy hat. I hear the ladder guy is good, though. 😂
